While Muttskis is generally all about dogs and cats, we still love cats and kittens! That’s why I urge you to celebrate this year’s Adopt-A-Cat Month by taking in your own fuzzy friend. Did you know more cats are euthanized in shelters than dogs?

If you can’t take in your own kitty, you can still celebrate this great holiday though by voting for Petfinder.com’s The Whisker’s Contest, or by enjoying the article I wrote for Neatorama about the World’s most famous cats.

I interrupt this regular dog blog to bring you a fascinating story about the animal kingdom at large (don’t worry, dogs are still involved). If you’re interesting, please read my new article at Environmental Graffiti that explains the science behind some of the coolest animal eyes in nature. It’s a pretty big article for me, so if you can, please digg it, share it or give it a thumbs up and I will owe you. Hope you like it, thanks!

One of the big problems with purebred dogs are the breeding standards that promote unhealthy conditions that are purely cosmetic. One of the biggest problems is ear cropping. Now the inventor of Neuticles is promoting a new product to help dogs who have failed ear croppings get their floppy ear to stand up straight. As if the invention itself isn’t bad enough, there is apparently huge support for both of these moronic products. One of our friends over at InventorSpot blogged about all the downfalls of these products only to be attacked. So throw her some support. Real dog-lovers know how stupid these things are, and so should the general public.

100_2215-300x225The recession has led to tons of animal surrenders and more shelter pets than ever before, but you can help. PetFinder has a great list by location of rescue groups in your area that are participating the Foster a Lonely Pet for the Holidays program. The goal is to provide even temporary loving homes to dogs, cats and other animals in need. –Of course, organizers are secretly hoping that you fall in love with the animal and keep it after the thirty day foster period, but even giving these pets love for thirty days can help, so look into helping out a critter this month.

tess2tesstess3

Tess is a ten-year old Siberian husky, samoyed, wolf , chow chow, and border collie mix –what a mix that is! She is a herder and tries to keep all her humans close together and in a group. Tess loves playing in the snow, barking at me to get out of the water when I’m swimming, running with her owner when he snowboards and mountain bikes, destroying squeaky toys, and occasionally sharing an ice cream cone or popsicle with her humans.

Little Tess lives in Vermont with Dean and is also kept company by Dean’s daughter, Phoebe.

Pets Creature Shelter Cats

I love this ad by the Michigan Humane Society to help promote the adoption of shelter kittens. To top things off, they’re actually giving away all cats over the age of four months and they come with “a free “multipoint inspection” including spay/neuter surgery, vaccinations, behavioral evaluation and grooming.” If you live in the area, it’s certainly something you should think about. If not, you can still adopt a sweet pre-owned kitten in your area, after all, you don’t NEED flashy advertising to get a kitty.

As dog fans, I thought you might be interested in the article I recently wrote for Neatorama detailing some truly heroic pit bulls. These dogs have a bad reputation, yet they are some of the sweetest animals around. Let me know your thoughts, thanks!

There is only one cage-free, no-kill shelter in America and now The St. Francis Animal Rescue Center going through a major financial crisis. Adoptions are low and donations are even lower. Even worse, the shelter was broken into by a drunk man last month. The doors are still broken and the cats he harassed are acting strange and irrate.

If you want to help the shelter, paypal donations can be made to StFrancisAnimalRescue@yahoo.com. For more info, visit Zoo Too.

37879f50d63999a2_easterliliesxlargerEaster lillies are poisonous to little kitties, so if you have kittens, keep them away from them. Better yet, don’t buy Easter lillies or bring them into your home. Just a few leaves or petals can kill a normal kitty.

In other pet news, today is Fitness & Weight Loss Day, so take your pup on a walk today. You could both use some excercise (not that you’re fat, everyone can afford to excercise) and it would surely make both of you happy.
